Summer Issue 2020

President's Report

Welcome to the Summer Issue of the SPotlight Newsletter.

I am sure that this spring is one we will all remember. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all. Some have lost friends, colleagues or relatives and others have been ill themselves. Even those not directly hit by COVID-19 have experienced dramatic changes in the way we live, work, interact, collaborate and communicate. Getting to a point where “FaceTime”, “Teams”, “Zoom” and “WebEx” is a big part of our daily lives and even though these can’t fully replace the person-to-person interaction, we have learned to use these virtual platforms to stay in touch and get our work done.

As COVID-19 has affected our day-to-day life it has also affected SPS; In particular, it will affect the 2020 Annual Meeting. After a detailed analysis and discussions with key stakeholders, the Board of Directors unanimously determined that the most responsible decision for the Society is to host the Annual Meeting as a Virtual Event. Cancellation of the 20th Annual Meeting was not an option – we will find a way to celebrate!

So please, Save the Dates of September 14-17, 2020 - at a PC, Tablet, or phone near you. We hope to “see” many of you there.

We are excited about the opportunities these virtual platforms can bring to our community, reducing barriers for attendance, and allowing more diverse participation from our colleagues across the globe. We believe that these platforms may be part of future meetings in conjunction with face-to-face possibilities as we start to plan for meetings beyond 2020. We look forward to sharing more information with you as we finalize details and ask for your patience as we make this transition.

We wish to thank everyone in advance, our supporters, exhibitors, vendors, presenters, member, and attendees for your continued support to SPS.

Meanwhile, check in with our monthly webinar schedule, and look at our new initiative launched by the SPS Academic Outreach Committee called “Safety Pharm Chats”.

Finally, I would like to thank the members of the Society who have signed up to take an active role in the upcoming activities of the Society. The Society is only as strong as the member support allows it to be.

Sincerely,

Tomas Mow, DVM, PhD, DSP
President, Safety Pharmacology Society

Annual Meeting News

We’re Going Virtual

We are excited to announce that after detailed analysis and discussions with key stakeholders regarding the impact COVID-19 will have on our 2020 Annual Meeting, the Board of Directors determined that the most responsible decision for the Society is to host the Meeting as a Virtual Event. The virtual event will be held over the original dates with the main content to be presented on September 14–17, 2020. The online agenda will be updated as soon as possible to reflect any changes in the schedule.

We look forward to sharing more information with you as it is finalized and ask for your patience as we make this transition. We encourage you to please visit our FAQs page in the meantime.

In the meantime, we would like to share 3 things to look forward to when we launch our virtual event in the coming weeks:

3 things to look forward to during the Virtual Meeting
  1. Fully integrated platform
Access to all the great content and formats you have come to expect (and a few new ones!) within the platform including the Exhibit Hall and posters! Best of all there is NOTHING to download.
  2. Tailored learning experiences The Program Committee has worked diligently to bring you a variety of meeting content and learning formats, which you will have access to live and on-demand.
  3. Multiple ways to connect Session chats, attendee messaging, networking lounge, Exhibitor chats/meetings, happy hours and more! There is no better way to share your thoughts and catch up with your friends and expand your network.

Partner with Us! Sponsorship Opportunities

SPS is in the process of planning our 2020 Virtual Meeting to be held over the dates of September 14–17; we anticipate this event will attract over 500 participants from around the globe. Over the last few months, the Program Committee has been hard at work to organize a scientific program that is inclusive of topics across the broad range of interests to our members and colleagues in the field.

General Annual Meeting Support

It is through the generous support of companies like yours that SPS has been able to offer affordable educational programs, such as our Annual Meeting, to a global audience. We hope that you will consider supporting the Society by becoming a sponsor of the 2020 Virtual Meeting. Please refer to the Sponsorship Levels showing the detailed list of benefits/recognition that SPS can offer in return for your support. If a formal grant/support request needs to be submitted online, we would be happy to complete the next steps to ensure we comply with your company's policy.

Exhibit Opportunities during the Virtual Meeting

SPS offers an intimate, focused, trade show experience with an exhibitor to attendee ration of 1:3. SPS NEWS

Diplomate in Safety Pharmacology (DSP) Certification Exam

Due to the change in format for the 2020 Annual Meeting (now virtual), the 2020 Diplomate in Safety Pharmacology (DSP) exam has been cancelled. If you already signed up to take the Exam, we will be in contact with you shortly to discuss options. We look forward to seeing you at a future exam!

2020 Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award Committee made the difficult decision to defer selecting an award recipient until next year. We had several very high-quality applications under review when the decision to pivot to a virtual meeting format was announced. The Committee felt that one of the honors for recipients who receive this award is presenting to their colleagues during our face to face meeting and they did not want to remove that special opportunity for the 2020 recipient if they continued with their review and selection for 2020.
