Distinguished Service Award
Distinguished Service Award Nomination Application 
The Distinguished Service Award Deadline is January 15, 2010. Please submit your nominations to SPS Headquarters! We request that you make nominations now for this coveted award to honor your fellow safety pharmacologist. We have modified the nomination process to simplify the initial application. Please see the amended details below. The Distinguished Service Award Committee is anxiously awaiting the nominations for this year. Your help and support with this nomination process is greatly appreciated.
Nominations close at midnight EDT January 15, 2010
This award is to honor an individual who has substantially contributed to the field of Safety Pharmacology.
For a nomination, the following criteria will be considered:
Specific research achievements
Champions of the field
Lifelong contribution to the field
Substantial specific contribution
Visionary direction
Regulatory decisions
Science of the field
Education
Collaboration between industry and academia
The Distinguished Service Award (DSA) will be given every year, although there shall be no obligation or duty to make such award when, in the sole opinion of the committee, there is no qualified nominee.
Nominations
Only Members may nominate although the nominee does not have to be a member. A member may not nominate more than one person per year.
Nominations must contain name of nominee, current position and address, and current e-mail address with the completed application (see above). After the nominations are received, the DSA committee will consider the nominees and generate a short list of nominees. At this time the committee will solicit from the nominators of the individuals from the short list three letters of support, a current Curriculum Vitae, and supporting documentation that indicates the nominee’s achievements in safety pharmacology (critical in the review of each nominee). SPS Headquarters.
The Award
Presentation of the Award will be given at the Annual Meeting of the Society. The recipient will be given a plaque, a cash award, and an invitation to deliver a presentation that may be published with the meeting proceedings. Travel expenses for the recipient to attend the meeting will be paid.
2010 Distinguished Service Award Winner
Gerd Bode, MD, Ph.D.
Gerd Bode, M.D, Ph.D,. holds board certified specializations in Pathology, Neuropathology, Legal Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology. After his university career he was head for Drug Safety and Pharmacovigilance at Boehringer Mannheim (Germany), then head of Lead Optimisation (Pharmacology, Toxicology, Kinetics, Metabolism, and Clinical Phase I) at Hoechst Marion Roussel/Aventis (Paris/France). Here, in parallel, he was global head of Safety Pharmacology. Finally he was head of preclinical research and development of ALTANA Pharma AG, Germany (Hamburg) until 2005, when he retired.
He serves since more than 25 years as lecturer at several German and French universities. He was for the European Industry (EFPIA) ICH-Topic Leader for Preclinical Safety Guidelines from 1989 to 2005 in the International Conferences on Harmonisation. Here he was Topic Leader for Safety Pharmacology and contributed in the drafting and finalization of the guidelines ICH S7A+B, Safety Pharmacology. Ever since, during conferences and workshops he tries to illustrate and clarify the recommendations outlined in the guidelines.
Gerd continues to work as a lecturer and enjoys finding optimal solutions for preclinical issues as an independent consultant. He is married, has two children; besides gardening he started to learn how to sail and golf.
The DSA Committee
The President will, in January, appoint a committee of 4, and either Chairs the committee or appoints a chair, making a five-person committee.
Nominations are due by January 15, 2010. The Committee will review the nominations, have one or more teleconferences in late January, request additional information as needed and make a decision by February 15, 2010. The winner will be notified no later than February 28, 2010, by letter from the President and/or the Chair of the Committee.
