Application Deadline: July 11, 2008

Purpose of the Program
To encourage and support representation of junior investigators engaged in safety pharmacology at the SPS annual meeting from all over the world.

Eligibility Criteria:
Eligible candidates include students (undergraduate or graduate), technical staff, and junior scientists, post-doctoral fellows (<5 years), and European early career lab heads. Candidates may come from within academia, contract research organizations, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, government or be engaged in preclinical research in safety pharmacology. Students are encouraged to apply. The research field can be any area of scientific novelty with application to Safety Pharmacology. Note: students are also eligible to apply for the Student Travel Award.

Required Materials:

  1. Application form and summary of research (500 words) sent as an e-mail attachment
  2. Resumé or curriculum vitae attached to application form
  3. One letter of recommendation from the mentor/supervisor or a faculty member/management. Letters of recommendation/nomination should be signed and sent postal or electronically (e.g. PDF format), or Faxed to the society.

All material should be sent to:
    E-mail: SPS Headquarters
    Fax: (703) 438-3113
Postal: 1821 Michael Faraday Drive, Suite 300
    Reston, VA 20190

Terms of the Award:
The award shall consist of:

  • The cost of coach airfare (flight arrangements made no less than 21 days prior to departure) to the Annual Safety Pharmacology Society Meeting, hotel expenses for up to 3 nights. A per diem of $ 50 for each day present at meeting based on accompanying receipts.
  • Registration fee for the Annual Meeting.
  • Free SPS membership for 1 year.
  • Winners are required to present a poster, attend the poster presentation and the Award announcement for receipt of the award certificate.

NOTE—the poster may also be entered in the Junior Investigator Poster Contest with the submission of an abstract.

The awardees will be notified two weeks after the application deadline and the abstract will eventually be published on the SPS Annual Meeting Web site. The Award is not transferable and must be returned to SPS if the awardee does not present a poster and attend the SPS Annual Meeting & Award announcement (i.e., if the awardee cannot come and sends the poster with a colleague, the colleague cannot claim the travel award).

SPS Junior Travel Award Committee:
The Committee Chair will be appointed by the Board, (maybe a Board Member or regular member), by no later than the January Board Meeting. The Chair forms a committee of 5–7 (4–6 additional people and the chair). The Committee Members should come from different geographic regions and have different safety pharmacology backgrounds including at least electrophysiology, cardiovascular, CNS, and respiratory research. The Board must approve the Committee Chair's recommendations of Committee Members by no later than the February Board Meeting of the appropriate year.

The review of the abstracts, judging and decision of the winners will be made by the Committee. The judging of the candidates documents will be done similar to the poster contest using evaluation forms (Appendix 2) and a 2 tier judging approach. The abstracts, with names and affiliations removed will be read by all judges, ranked, and an individual short list will be prepared. The whole Committee will then make the final decision (teleconference). In the event that the candidate affiliation becomes known, it is assumed any Committee Member from the same company will excuse themselves from further judging of this candidate. In the event an abstract is so technical, or from a scientific field not represented on the Committee, the Committee may use experts as needed.

The Committee may refuse any application they feel is inappropriate.

Persons interested in serving on this Committee should contact spshq@safetypharmacology.org SPS Headquarters by December 15, of the current year. SPS members will be encouraged to volunteer for this committee at Annual Meetings and on the annual meeting evaluation form.

Travel expenses will be reimbursed upon presentation of travel receipts based upon travel policy. Meeting registration fee is waived although all attendees should register on-line.
